Our
founder, James Cole Egbert, passed away on Monday,
January 12, 2009 after a courageous battle with
cancer. Jim is survived by his wife of 39 years,
Helen Preddy; daughters, Jennifer of Boulder,
Colorado, and Rebecca of Bozeman, Montana; sister,
Nancy Parks; brother, Tom Egbert; and nieces
and nephews.
Jim founded J.C.
Egbert & Associates in 1990 after a 25 year
career with the YMCA. He served YMCAs in Iowa,
Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota. His career
with J.C. Egbert & Associates included helping
dozens of YMCAs raise hundreds of millions of
dollars in capital and endowment campaigns.
“His life
and work impacted so many individuals and communities
that I’m sure he didn’t even realize.
I wouldn’t still be in the YMCA if it weren’t
for his encouragement and support,” said
one YMCA colleague.

The NAYDO Council has set up
a scholarship fund designed to help new YMCA
CEOs AND a Board member attend the annual
conference. The hope is that the fund will
be sufficient for the conference fees and
a travel stipend. Jim was an advocate for
this organization, starting in its earliest
years. He was involved when the conference
consisted of 20-30 individuals meeting to
share ideas in YMCA development. Now the conference
has grown to more than 1,100 attendees.

Jim was a Trustee of the Sioux Indian YMCAs.
He loved the work they did and was an advocate
of the work.
J.C. Egbert & Associates will continue to
serve YMCAs exclusively throughout the Midwest
and beyond. Daryl Sieplinga and Jim began developing
a transition plan in 2007 – before he was
diagnosed with cancer. They began implementation
in 2008 and that plan will continue in cooperation
with Jim’s wife, Helen. The name will remain
the same, in honor of Jim.
